There is something every local paddler knows and almost no visitor expects: the best month for kayaking on the Costa Blanca is not August. It is September.

That is not nostalgia. It is three facts.

1. The water is warmer than in June

The Mediterranean is slow to warm up and slow to cool down. In June it sits around 22-23 °C; by mid-September it is still 25-26 °C, because it has just banked a whole summer of heat. You get in without flinching, and if you capsize while practising, nothing happens.

It is the same reason October holds up well while May, with identical sunshine, feels cold. We break it down month by month in the best time of year to kayak on the Costa Blanca.

2. The coves empty out overnight

In the first week of September the Costa Blanca changes hands. The families go home for the school year, and coves that were a soup of inflatables in August are left to four people.

You notice it most in the small places:

  • Tío Ximo and La Almadrava, where August means arriving early to get a spot (route here).
  • Racó del Conill, in Villajoyosa, goes from packed to quiet enough to hear your paddle.
  • Cala de Finestrat stops having a queue for parking, which in summer is half the battle.

3. The sea is better at dawn

September mornings tend to come in flat: the overnight land breeze fades and the sea holds like glass until mid-afternoon. That is the perfect window for the longer routes, such as Benidorm Island or the cliffs of Serra Gelada, which turn into a gym as soon as it blows.

One caveat: September is also gota fría season. A morning can look perfect and by five in the afternoon you have a two-hour downpour. Check the forecast the night before and again in the morning — we explain how in how to read the wind and sea forecast.

The light, as a bonus

The sun sets around 8:15 pm and drops much faster than in July, so golden hour arrives at a civilised time, while you still feel like being on the water. If you have never paddled in that light, the routes are in sunset paddling in Benidorm.

How to make the most of it

We bring the gear to wherever you tell us — Benidorm, Villajoyosa or Cala de Finestrat — and pick it up afterwards, so logistics are not an excuse. The kayak arrives inflated and assembled, with paddles, life jackets and pump.
