Benidorm Island, sitting out in the bay, is the number-one goal for anyone who paddles these waters. You can see it from the whole of Levante Beach, it looks close… and paddling out to it is one of the best experiences on the Costa Blanca. But it pays to know what you are getting into before you set off.
Distance and time
From the marina area or the southern end of Levante Beach, the island is about 2 nautical miles away (roughly 3.5 km). At an easy pace it takes 30 to 45 minutes to get there, and the same to come back. This is not a quick dash: it is a half-morning outing that, with a stop on the island, easily fills two or three hours. That is exactly why it fits a full-day rental so well.
Difficulty: medium to hard
Let's be honest: this is not a route for absolute beginners. It is open water, with no shoreline to hold onto halfway across, and the prevailing current comes from the south-west. In calm conditions it is perfectly doable for anyone with a bit of fitness; in winds above 12-15 knots, leave it for another day. The golden rule: if you are unsure whether the sea is good enough, don't go out.
What you will see
The island is a protected natural area, home to colonies of seabirds such as the European storm petrel, the yellow-legged gull and the cormorant. Its clear waters and rocky bottom make it one of the best snorkelling spots in the whole area. You can land, walk up to the top and even eat at the small restaurant there.
Safety tips
- Set off early: the sea is usually flatter in the morning and the thermal wind hasn't kicked in yet.
- Keep your life jacket on the whole way, carry plenty of water and sunscreen.
- Go with company. In open water, travelling as a group is far safer.
- Check the wind and swell forecast the night before and again that morning.
- Put your phone in a dry bag: you'll want photos, and it's part of your safety kit.
Which equipment?
For this route we recommend a double or triple kayak, which is more stable and faster in open water than a paddle board. If you prefer a SUP, save it for days when the sea is completely flat and never go alone.
Fancy it? Book your kayak for the day you want and we'll bring it to your launch point. If it's your first time in the area, you might prefer to start with a calmer cove route and save the island for when you feel confident.
