If Benidorm Island is the bay's most famous route, the Serra Gelada (Sierra Helada) route is the most spectacular. This is a natural park where cliffs plunge into the sea from hundreds of metres up, rock walls glow gold in the evening light, and the water is so clear you can see the bottom for most of the trip.
The route
The classic outing starts from the northern end of Levante Beach, in the Rincón de Loix area. From there you paddle east, leaving the last buildings behind, and within minutes you are under the first cliffs. The coast turns wild: no beaches, no beach bars, no noise. Just rock, sea and the odd curious gull.
You can paddle as far as Punta del Cavall, where the 16th-century watchtower of Les Caletes overlooks the sea, and return the same way. That makes a round trip of about 6-7 km depending on how far you go: allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours of easy paddling, plus stops.

It is not a first-day route, but you don't need to be an expert either. You paddle parallel to the coast the whole way, which feels reassuring, though two things matter: there is almost nowhere to land beneath the cliffs, and when an easterly wind picks up, the backwash bouncing off the rock wall can get uncomfortable. What you will see
- Cliffs among the highest in the Valencia region, with spectacular folded rock strata.
- Caves and crevices at water level to peek into (without going right in if there is any swell).
- Rocky bottoms that are perfect for snorkelling: add snorkel masks as an extra to your booking.
- Seabirds: cormorants, gulls and, with luck, a peregrine falcon on the walls.
Practical tips
- Set off early: less wind, less boat traffic and better light on the cliffs.
- Carry plenty of water and a cap: there is little shade under the wall and the sun reflecting off the rock is fierce.
- Keep your life jacket on at all times, and your phone in a dry bag.
- Go with company and tell someone your plan: there are no lifeguards along this stretch.
