October is the month that never makes the brochures and the one locals prefer. People assume the beach season ended on 1 September and miss five weeks of the best conditions of the year.

What the water is actually like

In early October the Mediterranean here sits around 24 °C, and by the end of the month it is still 21-22 °C. For scale: that is warmer than an unheated swimming pool in July, and considerably warmer than the sea in May.

You paddle perfectly well in swim shorts. The post-paddle swim is no longer half an hour, but five minutes, easily.

What to bring that you did not in August

Not much, but it matters:

  • A long-sleeved rash vest or technical top. October sun is deceptive: it burns just as hard, you just do not feel it, so people cook without noticing.
  • A thin windproof in the dry bag. If it clouds over or cools down on the way back, you will be glad.
  • A real towel and dry clothes waiting in the car. In August you dry off walking; in October you do not.

The rest of the usual checklist is unchanged.

The autumn sea: the good and the bad

The good: plenty of dead-calm days, especially in the morning. Without the strong summer sea breeze, the water stays flat until later.

The bad: October is levante season, and autumn storms happen. When it blows, it really blows, and that is not a kayak day. The gap between a perfect day and a stay-at-home day is enormous, and you can see it in the forecast the night before: here is how to read it.

Rule of thumb for October: go in the morning. Afternoons turn more often.

The routes that work best now

  • Serra Gelada: with the sun lower, the cliffs get a completely different light. This is the route that gains most in autumn.
  • The Villajoyosa coves: in August you share Racó del Conill with half the town; in October, with nobody.
  • Benidorm Island: early morning only, and only with a good forecast, because the crossing shows it if there is any wind.

And the photos

Low October sun does what August sun cannot: it gives depth. Midday summer photos come out flat and blown out; in October, at any hour, they work. Go out at the end of the day and golden hour lands at 7 pm — sunset routes here.
