It is the question we get most on the phone, and it is almost always answered with another one: what exactly do you want to do? They are not rivals, they are different tools.
Choose a kayak if...
You want to cover ground. A kayak goes faster with less effort. For routes like Benidorm Island or the cliffs of Serra Gelada, it is the obvious answer.
You are bringing kids. An adult paddles and the child sits, safe and with no responsibility. On a board they either stand (hard) or sit in the way. More on that in kayaking and paddle boarding with kids.
You are carrying things. Cooler, backpack, mask, camera. They fit in a kayak; on a board they get wet.
There are two or three of you. You share the effort and you can talk. Our 2-3 seat kayak is by far the most rented.
There is some wind or chop. A kayak forgives far more; standing on a board, the wind pushes you like a sail.
Choose a paddle board if...
You want to see the bottom. Standing up you see far more than sitting down. For the snorkelling spots it is a joy — you spot the fish before you jump in.
The plan is short and calm. A loop around the bay, stop, swim, climb back on. Getting on and off a board is trivial; a kayak is more of a manoeuvre.
You are after exercise. SUP works your core far harder. An hour on a board is felt the next day.
You are on your own. A one-person board is easier to handle than a big half-empty kayak.
You want the photos. Let us be honest: standing up, with the Island behind you, it looks better.
What does not change
Neither of them needs a licence. Either way we deliver the gear inflated and assembled wherever you tell us — Benidorm, Villajoyosa or Cala de Finestrat — with paddles, life jackets and pump, and collect it afterwards. And both are full-day rentals, not by the hour.

The cheeky answer
If there are two or more of you and you cannot decide, the kayak + board combination settles the argument: one paddles, one stands, and halfway through the morning you swap. It is what almost everyone who tries both ends up doing.
