It is by far the question we get asked most: "do I need any permit or licence to rent a kayak?". The short answer is reassuring: no. But it's worth understanding the rules so you paddle safely and without surprises.
Note: this article is informational and summarises the general rules. It does not replace checking the official regulations in force or the judgement of the authorities. Conditions may change.
To paddle: no licence
In Spain, a kayak or a paddle board is considered a recreational floating device. To use them no qualification or nautical licence is required. Anyone can rent and paddle, always with common sense and respecting the sea conditions.
This is what makes kayak rental such an accessible activity: no courses, no exams, no paperwork. Just be able to swim and want to have fun.
The limits you should respect
No licence doesn't mean no rules. The common-sense and safety ones are what matter:
- Life jacket: it is compulsory to wear one. We always include it.
- Distance from shore: as a rough guide, these recreational craft usually have their navigation limited to a moderate distance from the coast (of the order of 1 mile when alone, a bit more if accompanied and with safety gear). In practice, for routes like ours, you're always hugging the coast or on short, controlled crossings.
- Swimming areas: you must respect the marked channels and not paddle inside the zones reserved for bathers.
- Sea conditions: the best rule is caution. In strong wind or swell, don't go out.
The one important exception: fishing
Here's the nuance many people don't know. Paddling a kayak requires no licence, but if you want to fish from the kayak, that changes: recreational sea fishing does require a regional licence (in the Valencian Community it is issued by the Generalitat). In other words: paddling and swimming, free; casting a line, you need a fishing licence.
In short
- Paddling a recreational kayak or SUP: no licence.
- Life jacket: compulsory (included).
- Respect distances, swimming areas and the state of the sea.
- Fishing from the kayak? That does need a regional fishing licence.
With that clear, all that's left is to choose your route. We make it easy: book your kayak or paddle board and we take care of the rest. If you want a calm start, Cala de Finestrat is ideal.
