If this is the first time you are putting a child in a kayak, do it at Cala de Finestrat. That is not a sales line: the cove is practically designed for it.
Why this cove and not another
- It is small. You are never far from shore, and with a child on board that completely changes how relaxed the adult is.
- It is sheltered by two breakwaters, so the water is flat almost always, even with some chop outside.
- You can see the bottom straight away, which entertains small children far more than paddling does.
- There are facilities right there: toilets, beach bars, shade. With kids, that is not a minor detail.
The longer route and the adult options are in Cala de Finestrat by kayak for beginners.
The route that works with kids
Follow the rocks of the northern breakwater, masks on, looking down, as far as the tip. Stop, swim, come back. Twenty minutes of actual paddling, an hour of plan. And that is plenty.
The classic mistake is proposing "just a little loop to that point over there". A six-year-old runs out of looking after twenty minutes, and from then on the paddling is all yours and the mood curdles. Better to do less and have them ask for more.
What age, and how they sit
- From 4-5 years old they sit perfectly well as passengers, in a life jacket their size. They do not paddle, they look.
- From 8-9 they start genuinely paddling and contributing.
- The life jacket must be their size, not a tightened adult one: it slips off over the head. We carry children's sizes — tell us the ages when you book.
- In a 2-3 seat kayak the comfortable layout is one adult at the back, the child in the middle, another adult at the front. The one at the back steers.
We go into more detail in kayaking and paddle boarding with kids.
The hour matters more than the day
Go first thing in the morning. Three reasons: the sea is flatter, there are no swimmers in the buoyed area, and the sun is not punishing yet. After 1 pm, with kids, it is hard work for everyone.
And the kayak assembly, solved
With children around, inflating a kayak on the sand is a small hell. We leave it inflated and assembled at the shore at the agreed time, with life jackets in every size, and collect it afterwards. You walk down with the towels and that is it.
If you are driving, check where to park at Cala de Finestrat first: it is the cove's weak point. Then tell us the day and the ages on the rental page.
